about

I hadn't written Tommy Comstock material in years. Then one evening on a speed bender I started writing these personal jangly songs. In my head even at this very early stage they FELT like Tommy Comstock songs.

So this summer during the break from uni I set myself the target of writing and recording an album in two months. Amphetamines helped. I didn't sleep. I was working in an impressionistic way and my only focus was to make a record that has at its core this unbridled energy and intensity. Its rough, mottled and blemished, but I'm proud of it. Its REAL. To me that's the essence of punk rock. I wanted it to sound like I'd lived it and that I meant it.

I am immensely proud of this album. Its by far the most raw, honest, personal, emotional thing I've ever released. Its also very much 'me', my sound, my words, my processes, authentic. At no point am I trying to impress people. Its just a record about feelings and politics and an ordinary bloke's struggles to deal with the shit life throws at him.

'But Still Our Hearts Persist' is the first Tommy Comstock album since 2010's 'Hope City Blues'. Its available exclusively through Every Man His Own Football Records.

PRESS PRAISE:

“He's finally made the weird, charming, outsider art record that hes been threatening to produce for the last thirteen years.”
- Token Homo

“Establishes Comstock as something more than 'just another folk-punk singer'.”
- This is OUR Punk Rock

“There are no pleasantries, no long intros or guitar solos, no fucking about cos what Comstock has to say is urgent, no time for that sort of nonsense, here we are dealing with big ideas - being too afraid to fight in Syria, wanting to kill yourself, having friends kill themselves, drug addiction (prescribed and illicit), the unreality of sexuality. As Tommy says - “songs about mental illness, capitalism and death”. This album clearly isnt afraid to stare darkness in the face!”
- This is Professional DIY!!!!!

“But Still Our Hearts Persist manages to alternately evoke Billy Bragg, A Silver Mt Zion, Robert Wyatt and the more tuneful end of outsider art and anti-folk [...] Its a singular vision presented here, and its clear that while heavily indebted to his influences Tommy Comstock is very much his own man.”
- Praying Mantis

“A new kind of soul music from a troubled man living through dark times.”
- The Drunken Psychogeographer
